EWM Light Client Testnet Update: Progress and What’s Next

The EWM Light Client Testnet gains momentum, with participants helping decentralize and preserve Ethereum’s history through the RUN EWM campaign.
2024-10-24

We’re excited to provide an update on the EWM Light Client Testnet, which is gaining momentum as it contributes to Ethereum’s original vision by preserving its history for future generations of applications.

TL;DR

  • 400+ participants are now live on the EWM Light Client Testnet

  • Increasing testnet spots from 250 to 500 due to popular demand

  • 3 version updates shipped, addressing key bugs and improving functionality

  • 2M+ Data Availability Samples (DAS) verified

  • 7,000+ participants on the waitlist

Preserving Ethereum’s History

Ethereum’s growth has always been driven by a commitment to decentralization, and as the network continues to evolve, one critical challenge remains: how to preserve its historical data in a way that ensures accessibility and trustlessness. The Ethereum Wayback Machine (EWM) is a DePin infrastructure designed to preserve Ethereum’s historical data and ensure it remains accessible and free from centralization risks. As Ethereum scales, the EWM ensures that historical data is not lost.

Essential to the EWM is the EWM Light Client––a lightweight, decentralized tool that enables participants to validate proofs in the Covalent Network without the need for heavy infrastructure. Rather than relying on costly, high-powered nodes to verify data, the EWM Light Client allows many smaller, independent participants to contribute.

This effort is part of the RUN EWM campaign, an initiative encouraging community participation in preserving Ethereum’s history. Through this campaign, participants help ensure that Ethereum’s data remains decentralized and accessible to all, supporting the network’s vision of becoming a secure, scalable World Computer.

RUN EWM Progress So Far

The EWM Light Client Testnet has made significant progress since its launch one month ago, with 400 participants now signed up to contribute to the decentralization of Ethereum’s historical data. We’ve rolled out three version updates, addressing bug fixes and improving the overall user experience. To date, the network has successfully verified over 2 million Data Availability Samples (DAS), showcasing the core functionality of the EWM Light Clients.

Originally, we set a goal of 250 participants for the testnet, but due to popular demand, we’re expanding the number of spots to 500, giving more individuals the opportunity to support Ethereum’s long-term vision of decentralization.

It’s important to note there is no selection criteria to run the light client. We are working sequentially through the waitlist in batches. If you haven’t received an email yet, please be patient as we process the waitlist.

Next Steps for Mainnet Launch

As we prepare for mainnet launch, our goal is to first onboard 2,500 participants. The expansion will be supported by a rewards profile offering 15-20% APY for mainnet participants. This will be essential to scaling the network and ensuring the long-term decentralization of Ethereum’s historical data.
